Birding Stories & News 2009 Little England - A hope for the future Peaking Duck - 300 Whistling Ducks poisoned in YONOK Happy New Year - "Friends of Yonok Wetland" Laos Hunters - Caught trapping waders in Thailand
" Out with a Bang" - Happy New Year- Dowroong's nephew Som Pong a young man in his early twenties was dragged into a car by a four men in Surat Thani - South Thailand during New Years celebrations. He was then taken to a remote location and shot dead at point blank range with four bullets to the head. The Police say that they believe he was murdered by a terrorist group. The bullets recovered from Khun Som Pong body were said to have been identified as the same as found in other killings in Thailand. "Cheers! and happy new year" to all you mindless morons who do the dead's of others - to weak to think for yourselves and no guts to stand alone. Being a Man - requires self respect and self discipline. If you are religious and have a desire to allow your self to be controlled by others; consider this; The wilderness is a place where wise men gained the gift of humanity and self awareness - Now! go out into the wilderness "alone if you dare" and rediscover yourself - you will see that in doing the bidding of others, that you are a servant of your master the Devil. 2008: The later months of the year have been sad time for us here; with the loss off some dear friends and relations. David Davenport YO - Khun Chutchanchai Dama. Khun Tong Jacobs Khun Som Pong Brothers in Arms - this songs for David, I know you liked this song, and it spaeaks a truth. Little England - A hope for the future Little England Wetland Bog: Dowroong and I had tracked twp Pied Harriers as they flew in the late evening to roost, they had crossed the Mekong from Laos and with my previous knowledge of the area I located the roost the following evening, where 35 Pied Harriers roosted in the wet grassland. We discovered Little England Wetland Bog on the 14th Dec 2001. A magical place, a wilderness, where on rare occasion 30 adult male Pied Harrier dance in the sky in the late evening. On a evening visit two years ago we found a lone grass owl, it took us several weeks to locate the nest; this was the first breeding record in Thailand of this species. Sadly two of the Owls were shot dead.
Little England is a special place, for us and its birds. Years ago we used to camp out there with the Harriers. The area boasts the best forest in Chiang Saen district. The area is of open country, rolling hills and patches of forest, mainly secondary and bamboo, however some older woodland still remains where pitas and Blue-bearded Bee-eaters can be found. A lone Serpent Eagle occasionally soars. I named it Little England as it reminded me of the English downs. In a way it reminds me of Beauliegh road in the New forest, The site was then remote and as no Thai village was nearby and the area was unmarked on any maps, I chose this name Little England out convenience. When first we discover Yonok and it’s Harrier roosts, I called it Chiang Saen wetlands, for want of a meaningful name, however; once I realized its true name I have since referred to it as Yonok and duly named this web site and project after it. However Little England has only this name; I suppose it translates as “Ungrit Nitnoi” It has recently been suggested that I should change the name to Thai. However after a lot of thought; for me and Dowroong we have invested 7 years of our lives in Little England. I am very proud as an Englishman to have achieved with Dowroong a measure of success in protecting this area for Thailand and Birds. We have done this with guts and determination and no financial assistance. I have chased hunters with rifles and removed traps and mist nets. Dowroong has spoken to villagers, village heads, schools, farmers, hunters, Royal project officers, land agents and just about anybody we see in the area of Little England. The BCST and Lanna Bird Group have been interested in helping but the legality of ownership seems to be a problem for them. I don’t care who owns it, I want it looked after and some how with Dowroong’s charm we have won the hearts of many local people and I am starting to feel some what more confident in Little England’s future. Back in April 2008: I thought we had lost Little England “forever” to the plough. The tractors were in and the grass owl roost was on fire. Slash and Burn – coupled with tractors means disaster in a day for a small area. A gang of slasher's were hacking the place to bits. What would you do!!!!. Well ‘ I don’t speak Thai. So I just go up to the boss and wave my arms. Dowroong’s gone on the bus to Chiang Rai. I don’t have a phone so I have to go back home and get someone to phone her. Later that afternoon we drove out to talk with the land agent; Mr Samart and Dowroong managed to convince him of the importance of Llittle England. I must say! That at the grass routes level. I am impressed with many Thais, who I believe will help if they can, and it is with Dowroong persuasion and a gift for explaining benefits of changes in land use with a measure of conservation that has been instrumental in protecting this magic place. There are some fat wallets made out of birding. Mine is empty and I don’t really care what people think of me. I see many playing the game of conservation. This aint a game it’s reality. Please email with your support. It’s deserved.
