Yonok Wetlands Project - Woman Conservation group.

Dowroong Danlamajak.

Khun Nedtaya, Khun Paire and Khun Saicum (Ban Huai Nam Rak).

Progress and updates - 8th September 2008.

Dowroong Woman Conservation group is going well, with a current membership of 61 women.

At present there is just one group and we meet at Wat pa Mak No on the first Sunday of the each month. The group was started by Dowroong six months ago and has become very successful.

The woman’s group is supported by the local village Ampur (government office) who advises as to when meetings are held.

What do they do?

Basically the idea is to give the villages a reason to support conservation of Yonok and so our meetings are devised to find ways of helping the group to develop a community spirit that works towards conservation.
The making of handicrafts and the sale of various food and drink items at fates and festivals has worked well in spreading the word and we now have a number of villages wishing to join. Each village will run its own group.

Dowroong has instigated a small fund the group. The fund is administered by the group, this is purely a group fund and for their benefit and neither Dowroong nor YWP receive or gain monetary rewards.

Our reward is that women support of our conservation ideas. However they do give their time freely to conservation and are available for various activities such as Tree planting, Children’s outings and the making of signs etc.

The woman’s group has had a major influence of hunting and trapping of birds in the Yonok by persuading villagers and friends that conservation is a better way. They have also persuaded local markets to stop the sale of wild birds for eating.

I am delighted to see them wearing the Yonok Tee shirts with the Harrier logo and this has helped to gain interest from a wide variety of people.

The Chiang Saen police football team has asked if we will supply them with a Yonok wetlands football kit and as they play in the Chiang Rai area this could well be a bonus for promoting Yonok.

A large number of women have joined; Dowroong's Conservation Group

The idea is to bring people together and work towards conserving Yonok wetlands

A Chief of Police was delighted to give a short talk on conservation. His comedy style was very much welcomed.

A lot of good items on sale here

The Event was the annual Rocket Firing Completion and all the local leaders were present. I have to sat it all went off with a Huge Bang. Some of the rockets miss fired and had us all running for cover. It was an excellent day enjoyed by all that attended
