Woman Bird Conservation – Thailand.

Yonok Wetlands Project - Woman Conservation Group.

Dowroong Danlamajak.

Khun Nedtaya, Khun Paire and Khun Saicum (Ban Huai Nam Rak).

14th October 2008:

Good Morning and Welcome to:

Chiang Saen Police HQ - Conference Hall

Yonok Wetland Project – with;

Dowroong Woman - Conservation Group

Have been invited by:

Police Colonel - Mr Surachia Tainchia

Police Lieutenant, Colonel - Mr Prayed Singsin

To speak on Bird Conservation

Protecting - Wild Birds & Animals; by banning the “sale”  in the Markets of Chiang Saen District

I have to thank the Police for Listening and acting quickly on our behalf  us all.

“Minutes”

The meeting commenced at 0930 - 11.00.

I have to say I was most impressed with the interest shown by the Police Lieutenant, Colonel - Mr Prayed Singsin

Mr Prayed Singsin; will instruct the placement of the signs proclaiming "Sale of wild birds Prohibited” in the market at Chiang Saen.

Khun Prayad Singsin; said that this will include all markets in the Chiang Saen districts.

Further; he asked us to make some more signs as he will extend his influence to Mai Sai, Mai Chan and eastwards towards Chiang Klong.

This will  include all village markets and effectively makes the sale of wild birds “dead of alive” illegal to sell in all markets in the so called “Chiang Saen Basin”.

Khun Prayad Singsin said that he will also provide a senior member of his Police force to attend meetings with future Woman conservation groups in his district.

He thanked Dowroong and her woman conservation group for their support in bringing this matter to his welcome attention.

This is excellent news and I understand that the police officer in question is the same man who attended the inaugural woman conservation group meeting at Wat Pamak No; some six months ago.

He and his wife (a senior official in the Chiang Saen government) put on a very good talk at the Temple, in a light hearted manner, mixed with humor. They went down very well and I am very pleased to have his experience and advice in the future.

The main speakers at this most excellent meeting Today were;

Dowroong Danlamajak; who spoke on the role of Yonok wetland with regard to conservation and Non Hunting.
She also spoke on the subject of other conservation groups throughout the world who are keen to protect the future of Yonok and the wildlife.

Ms; Nidtaya Comechon of the Yonok Wetland WCG, spoke on the need to expand the project to other areas, this prompted the Police chief to make the gesture of widening the field.

Mick Davies; I thanked everyone for attending this meeting and I said that; I was honored and proud to be associated with the people present today. I thanked Dowroong and Lieutenant, Colonel - Mr Prayed Singsin for all their hard work in setting up this important step in the future of conservation. What we have done hear today is to set a president for others to follow.

I also said that; Thailand is a country that does listen to people and that officers such as Khun Prayad Singsin, make them selves accessible to the general public when a genuine need arises. Many of the world’s countries could learn a lesson here.

Dowroong on behalf of Yonok Wetlands, Woman Conservation group and the bird Conservation Society of Thailand presented the police with a number of items we hope they will find useful.

A copy of the Birds of Thailand.

20 field guides on the birds of Northern Thailand.

25 books on the conservation of wetlands.

10 signs "Sale of wild birds Prohibited” (Chiang Saen Police authority).

The book related to the law on the sale or trapping of wild birds (supplied by P D Round BCST).

Ian Smith of Viang Yonok Hotel; pledged his support and we thank Ian and his wife Vassana for supporting Yonok wetlands project.

----------------------------------

Now is the time for a change and there is a genuine will by many members of the Police and public to effect that change.

Many hunters are probably not aware that what they are doing is against the law. The slaughter of wildlife in the “Chiang Saen Basin”. Has gone on for 30 years of more.

With a joint and concerted effort we can make a real and significant contribution to changing attitudes in Thailand. We hope the that others will follow.

Mick

What do we need!!!!!.

1: We have to make a lot more signs. Each batch of signs will have its own  Police District office name.

2: We plan to set up meetings will all the larger villages that have markets; and explain to the Head of the village why the signs have been placed and the role of the YWP woman conservation group.

3; The role of the woman group is many fold.
