Dear Dowroong & Mick

Now that we’re home again I just wanted to say thank you again for a most enjoyable “birding” trip while we were at Anantara on 1 Feb. We thoroughly enjoyed it, and appreciated your expertise. Just as well we saw some birds then – John’s warning was right – there is nothing apparently living along the Mekong . In two days sailing to Luang Prabang I saw 2 lapwings and 5 sandpiper things. The rest of the trip in Laos was just as poor in terms of sightings; slightly better in Cambodia .

With happy memories of meeting you,

Alex & Anne Scott

Dear Mick and Dowroong,

Myself and Bert Looten, both Belgians, went birding yesterday and today.

30 October 2007 we saw 8 Northern Hobby near Baan Mae Aeb. The birds
were sitting preening and sunning in a tall tree about 8 AM at a
distance of about 100 metres. Baan Mae Aeb is on the East side of Doi
Luang in Amphur Chiang Saen.

31 October 2007 we saw a Richards Pipit that was certainly not a Richard
Pipit. We know about your observation of a Long-billed Pipit and we say
that we have also seen 1 Long-billed Pipit. The bird had entirely plain
upper parts and appeared to have plain underparts as well. Later during
the day we have seen Richard's Pipit. The Long-billed Pipit was seen in
following location : before making the final climb to Phra That Doi Ku
Kaeo, take the dirt road going left; this road goes below the North side
of Doi Ku Kaeo and runs into an mandarin grove and eventually to Yonok
rubbish tip. The Long-billed Pipit was sitting near mandarin row number
60. We had a good look at it before a rubbish truck chased it away.

Regards,
Rik

Great to spend the morning with you, and what a great day! And thanks for the follow up. I had almost all on my list. Do you by chance remember the circumstances where we saw the two different types of snipe? And I also didn't have down the red-throated flycatcher or the Common Iora? There were so many great birds that I'm not sure I got them all down. But to see the jacunas, the hoopoe, and the barbet was amazing. I'll e-mail you my hoopoe pictures when I get to my computer.

Thanks!

Ted Dintersmith.

Dear Nick and Dowroong: We are looking very forward to our visit and meeting and learning from you. One query, regarding binoculars: do our students need to bring them - or will there be enough available to share? We will be 12 people in all. Looking very forward to meeting you. Sincerely yours, Larry

Lawrence J. Berliner Professor and Chair Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry University of Denver,

fantastic!
